The Missing Link: Pelvic Health & Back Pain - Michelle Lyons
This evidence-informed presentation explores the links between pelvic health and female lumbopelvic pain, highlighting how urinary symptoms, bowel dysfunction, pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, breathing and pressure management, and load transfer may influence both symptoms and rehabilitation. Drawing on current research and clinical experience, participants will examine the unique challenges faced by active women and athletes, where back pain often intersects with pelvic health.
The session will also explore important differential diagnoses that can masquerade as โmechanicalโ back pain, including endometriosis and other pelvic pain disorders, helping clinicians recognise when symptoms warrant broader clinical reasoning or onward referral.
Participants will learn practical, sensitive screening questions and assessment strategies that can be incorporated into any musculoskeletal or sports physiotherapy assessment. The emphasis is on knowing what to ask, what to look for, and recognisingย when pelvic health may be a missing piece of the clinical puzzle.
By the end of the session, participants will feel more confident identifying red flags and hidden contributors to female low back pain, integrating pelvic health into everyday practice, and recognising when (and how)ย targeted pelvicย rehabilitation may improve outcomes.
Learning objectives:ย
- Describe the current evidence linking bladder, bowel and pelvic floor dysfunction with female low back pain.
- Discuss the intersection between pelvic health, lumbopelvic pain and athletic performance in active women and female athletes.
- Recognise pelvic health conditions and differential diagnoses,ย including endometriosis,ย that may present as or contribute to persistent low back pain.
- Incorporate simple, evidence-informed pelvic health screening questions into routine musculoskeletal assessments.
