Course Description:

This course introduces the participant to penile assessment and treatment and discusses specific dysfunctions related post-vasectomy, circumcision, and hernia. What is the role of pelvic physiotherapy?

Objectives:

Following this course the participant will be able to:

  • List the indications and contraindications, precautions for genital rehabilitation related to the spermatic cord, testicles, scrotum and penis.
  • Demonstrate skills for creating a safer environment for genital rehabilitation within the participant’s scope of practice and with appropriate attention to creating appropriate boundaries.
  • Describe specific examination and intervention techniques for penile assessment and treatment and genital rehabilitation.
  • Explain the potential pelvic dysfunction in the literature that may result from circumcision, hernia repair, vasectomy or injuries to the genitals.
  • Identify from prior and most current research references the role of pelvic rehabilitation providers for conditions such as penile pain, erectile dysfunction, penile curvature.

        Audience: Participants are welcome to attend who have within their scope of practice to complete examination and intervention techniques for pelvic floor muscles and other structures of the pelvis including genital structures.

        Prerequisites: We strongly recommend completion of level 1 which includes internal palpation based on the information and skills taught during this course. If registering for this course without completion of level 1, the information and skills taught must only be used within your scope of practice.

        Holly Tanner

        Holly Tanner is licensed as a physical therapist and as a massage practitioner in Washington state. Holly graduated from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota with a Masters in Physical Therapy in 1995. She completed training as a licensed Massage Practitioner in 2003 (MA00017967) and has combined her love for both fields by integrating bodywork into patient care. In addition to physical therapy and massage practitioner degrees, Holly is ABPTS board-certified in Orthopedics and in Women’s Health, and is certified as a Pelvic Rehabilitation Provider. She has been certified as a Clinical Instructor and as a Pelvic Muscle Dysfunction Biofeedback provider.

        She completed a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2013 at the College of St. Scholastica, where Holly has also served as adjunct faculty in the Doctoral of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. In addition to serving as adjunct faculty both in the classroom and in the online DPT program for St. Scholastica, Holly served as adjunct faculty for the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where she taught the graduate-level anatomy course within the Physical Therapy program and developed an elective in Women’s Health.

        Currently, Holly serves as the Director of Education for the Herman & Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute, which she joined as faculty in 2006. For the Institute, Holly teaches the Pelvic Floor Series, the Peripartum courses, and the Men’s Pelvic Rehabilitation course. She has served as a consultant to hospitals, private clinics, medical companies, state chapters, new practice owners, and for research project development.
